…this guide is for you.

12–18 Months Before the Wedding: The Big Decisions
The very first phase of wedding planning sets the foundation for everything else. This is the season for dreaming, brainstorming, and locking in your major vendors before dates disappear.
Celebrate Your Engagement First
Before diving headfirst into planning mode, take a moment to simply enjoy being engaged. Plan a short getaway, celebrate with family, take photos, and soak it all in.
This season goes by faster than you think.

Set Your Wedding Budget
One of the very first wedding planning steps is deciding:
- How much you want to spend
- Who is contributing financially
- What matters most to you as a couple
Some couples prioritize photography. Others want amazing food, live music, or stunning florals. Decide where to splurge and where to simplify.
Book Your Wedding Venue Early
Your venue determines:
- Your wedding date
- Your wedding style
- Your guest count
- Your vendor availability
- Your overall wedding experience
Popular wedding venues often book 12–24 months in advance for peak dates.
If you’re dreaming of a romantic waterfront wedding in Texas, Lakefront Acres Wedding Venue offers stunning lake views, indoor and outdoor ceremony spaces, and customizable wedding packages designed to make planning easier.

Start Gathering Inspiration
Now is the fun part:
- Pinterest boards
- TikTok wedding ideas
- Instagram inspiration
- Wedding blogs
- Color palettes
- Wedding themes
This is when your vision starts becoming real.
8–12 Months Before the Wedding: Build Your Dream Team
Once your venue is booked, it’s time to secure the vendors who will bring your wedding day to life.
Create Your Guest List
Your guest count impacts:
- Catering costs
- Venue layout
- Rentals
- Bar service
- Invitations
- Overall budget
Start with a rough draft, then narrow it down over time.

Choose Your Wedding Party
Ask your bridesmaids, groomsmen, flower girls, and ring bearers early so they have plenty of time to prepare.
This is also a great time to:
- Plan engagement photos
- Ask your officiant
- Start discussing bachelor and bachelorette parties
Shop for Your Wedding Dress
Wedding dresses can take months to arrive and often require multiple alterations.
Most brides start shopping 8–12 months before the wedding to avoid stress later.
Don’t forget:
- Shoes
- Veil
- Jewelry
- Undergarments
- Accessories
Hire Key Wedding Vendors
The most-booked wedding vendors usually include:
- Photographer
- DJ or band
- Caterer
- Wedding planner or coordinator
- Florist
- Cake baker
- Videographer
Pro tip: Always get contracts in writing and confirm vendors are insured.

6–9 Months Before the Wedding: Details Begin Coming Together
This phase is where your wedding vision starts turning into an actual event.
Send Save the Dates
Especially important for:
- Destination weddings
- Holiday weekends
- Large guest counts
- Out-of-town guests
Guests appreciate having time to plan travel and accommodations.
Book Hotel Blocks & Transportation
Reserve:
- Guest hotel room blocks
- Wedding night accommodations
- Shuttle services or transportation if needed
This is especially helpful for guests traveling from Dallas, Fort Worth, Corsicana, or surrounding areas.
Plan Your Honeymoon
Wedding planning can feel stressful at times, so having a honeymoon to look forward to helps keep things exciting.
Make sure to:
- Check passports
- Research travel requirements
- Book flights early
- Consider travel insurance

3–5 Months Before the Wedding: Finalizing the Important Details
Now things start feeling very real.
Finalize Your Menu & Cake
Schedule tastings and finalize:
- Dinner selections
- Cocktail hour options
- Bar service
- Desserts
- Dietary accommodations
Food is one of the things guests remember most.
Work on Your Wedding Day Timeline
A solid wedding timeline keeps the day flowing smoothly and helps prevent chaos.
You’ll want to coordinate:
- Hair & makeup schedule
- Photographer arrival
- Ceremony timing
- Cocktail hour
- Reception entrance
- First dances
- Toasts
- Cake cutting
- Grand exit
This is one reason having a month-of coordinator can be incredibly valuable.
Hair & Makeup Trials
Do NOT wait until wedding day to test your beauty look.
Trials help avoid:
- Makeup regrets
- Hair disasters
- Timing issues
- Product sensitivities
Bring inspiration photos and wear white if possible to visualize the full look.
6–8 Weeks Before the Wedding: Communication Season
At this point, communication becomes everything.
Send Wedding Invitations
This is one of the biggest wedding planning milestones.
Track: We at Lakefront Acres supply you with a free wedding website and RSVP tracking system!
- RSVPs
- Meal selections
- Dietary needs
- Plus-ones
You’ll thank yourself later for staying organized.
Confirm Every Vendor
Reach out to every vendor and confirm:
- Dates
- Times
- Arrival schedules
- Remaining balances
- Final details
Create a master contact list for wedding day.
Start Marriage License Research
Every state has different marriage license requirements.
Research:
- Waiting periods
- Expiration dates
- Required identification
- Office hours
You do NOT want to leave this until the last minute.
Texas Brides & Grooms!
Here are the basic requirements to get married in Texas in 2026!
- Both applicants must generally be at least 18 years old.
- Both people usually need to appear in person at a Texas county clerk’s office.
- You’ll need a valid government-issued photo ID such as:
- Driver’s license
- Passport
- State ID
- Military ID
- You must provide your Social Security number (you typically do not need the physical card).
- Texas does not require a blood test.
- There is a mandatory 72-hour waiting period after getting the license before the ceremony can take place, unless you qualify for a waiver.
- The marriage license is valid for 90 days.
- If either person was divorced recently, Texas generally requires a 30-day wait after the divorce is finalized before remarrying, unless waived by a judge.
- Witnesses are not legally required in Texas.
Typical marriage license cost:
- Usually around $80–$85 depending on the county.
- Couples who complete an approved premarital course (like “Twogether in Texas”) can often get a discount and skip the 72-hour wait.
You can apply in any Texas county — it does not have to be the county where you live or where the wedding will happen. (Some counties have beautiful marriage licenses!)

3–5 Weeks Before the Wedding: The Final Push
This phase is all about tying up loose ends.
Finalize Music & Photography Details
Meet with your DJ and photographer to confirm:
- Must-play songs
- Do-not-play songs
- Special dances
- Shot lists
- Family photo groupings
The more organized you are now, the smoother wedding day will feel.
Finish Seating Charts
One of the least glamorous wedding tasks… but one of the most important.
Be prepared for:
- Last-minute guest changes
- Missing RSVPs
- Family politics
- Table balancing
It’s normal. Every couple goes through it.
1–2 Weeks Before the Wedding: Time to Prepare
You’re almost there.
Pack an Emergency Kit
Include: (At Lakefront Acres we already have this for you!)
- Bobby pins
- Sewing kit
- Pain reliever
- Safety pins
- Fashion tape
- Tissues
- Snacks
- Water
- Stain remover
Someone always needs something.
Watch the Weather Forecast
Especially for outdoor weddings.
Discuss backup plans with your venue in advance so you feel prepared no matter what Texas weather decides to do.
Final Walkthrough at Your Venue
Your walkthrough should cover: (We do what’s called a 30-day walk-through to go over EVERYTHING!)
- Setup details
- Ceremony layout
- Timeline
- Décor placement
- Vendor logistics
- Final questions
This is when everything starts feeling real.

3–7 Days Before the Wedding: Breathe
At this point, your job is no longer to “plan everything.”
Your job is to:
- Stay hydrated
- Rest
- Relax
- Delegate
- Enjoy the experience
Prepare Final Vendor Payments & Tips
Place payments in labeled envelopes and assign someone trustworthy to distribute them. (generally, your coordinator would take care of this for you!)
This prevents interruptions on wedding day.
Double Check EVERYTHING
Do not forget:
- Rings!
- Marriage license!
- Shoes
- Accessories
- Vows
- Overnight bags
- Wedding attire
Seriously… triple check the rings.
The Night Before the Wedding
The night before your wedding should feel calm, meaningful, and exciting.
Attend your rehearsal dinner, spend time with loved ones, and try your best to rest.
Most importantly:
Take a deep breath.
This is the moment you’ve been planning for.
Wedding Day Advice Every Couple Needs to Hear
Your wedding day will not be perfect.
Something small may go wrong.
Someone may run late.
The flower girl may refuse to walk.
The weather may surprise you.
But none of those things are what you’ll remember most.
You’ll remember:
- Holding hands before the ceremony
- The look on your partner’s face
- Laughing with your favorite people
- Dancing under the lights
- Quiet moments together after everyone leaves
Those are the moments that matter.
And as I tell all my brides and grooms, nob
