Planning a Wedding in East Texas: Groom’s Checklist Essentials

Waterfront wedding venue, East Texas wedding venue, East Texas wedding venues, venues close to Dallas, Corsicana wedding venue, modern wedding venue, wedding venue that is not a barn.

This one is for my dudes! Having been a part of the process of planning weddings for over 20 years, I’ve seen many grooms and groomsmen get ready for their big day. While wedding planning is often seen as the “bride’s” duty and domain, the men should absolutely take an active part in the planning process. It’s your big day too! A groom’s checklist can help. Click the link to download a complete Groom’s Checklist to help you organize and keep track of things that need to be done.

Since I’ve been helping couples plan weddings for quite a while, I’ve put together a groom’s checklist of essentials to make sure they are fully prepared.

Communication is essential (with your spouse to be!)

Have an open conversation with what you both envision for your big day. Hopefully, you didn’t get engaged without good communication, and wedding planning is no different! Talk about your individual priorities, what’s important to you both, traditions, and the overall vibe of your wedding. Make sure your expectations are balanced and how involved each of you will be in the planning process.

Below are some key examples of where the groom can take an interest at our wedding venue in East Texas:

  1. Helping to select your wedding venue & your important vendors
  2. Help create the guest list with family and friends
  3. Choosing your wedding colors
  4. Planning the catering & food selection
  5. Designing the wedding cocktails & beverage menu… this is a good one for the guys

Get Your Attire Order

Brides often worry about their fiancé waiting too long to finalize what they are wearing for the wedding day. Renting or buying a tux or suit is a much simpler process than buying a wedding dress, but that doesn’t mean you should wait until the last minute, I’ve seen it happen, unfortunately!

Here’s a priority short list for your attire:

  • Decide whether to rent or buy.
  • If you choose to purchase a suit or tux, start early to allow time for any shipping, tailoring and fitting.
  • If you choose to rent, choose online rental or an in-store fitting. Get fitted EARLY. There are benefits for both.
  • Online tux rental is pretty convenient, you can try on at home 3-4 months before the wedding, giving plenty of time for adjustments and replacements.
  • If using a rental store, schedule your appointment for fitting at least 2-3 months in advance for any necessary adjustments. Working with your local rental shop offers a more personalized experience.
  • Choose your accessories. Small details always make a difference. Your tie, shoes, and cufflinks should complement the overall wedding vibe.
  • Prioritize and go for comfort. Nobody wants to be miserable, and in Texas, outdoor weddings can get warm or cold depending on your season. Make sure your attire is breathable and comfortable for the time you have chosen for your wedding.

Coordinate with Your Groomsmen

At Lakefront Acres, we often see groomsmen wanting to help by stepping up with small but important tasks. Having your best friends by your side can make your wedding day even more special.

Get them involved by:

  1. Assign them small tasks. Whether it’s delivering food or decor to the venue, greeting and seating guests.
  2. Schedule your wedding morning. Grooms typically have a lot more chill time, but don’t let that time slip away! Plan your own timeline before the ceremony begins and make sure everyone knows and understands what it is.
  3. Make a plan for the rings! One of your besties can be the keeper, choose a ring guardian. Your best man is the safest choice for keeping the rings secure until the ceremony. (Pro tip: Don’t hand them off to a young ring bearer!) Make sure you’ve got everything handled well before the ceremony.

YOU the Groom’s Essentials

  1. Take Care of Yourself! As the groom, you deserve the sweet life too! Looking and feeling your best on your wedding day starts with a little self-care.
  2. Get a haircut & shave. Book an appointment 1-2 weeks before the wedding to ensure a fresh look.
  3. Consider a little extra grooming. Many grooms schedule a massage, facial, or even a manicure to relax before the big day.
  4. Double-check personalization of your rings. Make sure to review them carefully when you pick them up for the correct engravings or customizations.
  5. Pack an Essentials Kit – we here at Lakefront Acres wedding venue in East Texas have an emergency kit, but it’s always a good idea to have your own. You don’t need to pack everything, just a few must-haves. (Extra tie, socks, or shirt, Breath mints & deodorant, and small first-aid items (band-aids, pain relievers, etc.)
